The Sentencing Guidelines Council’s role is to issue sentencing guidelines to assist all courts in England and Wales, to help encourage consistent sentencing.

The Council is an independent body which took over responsibility for developing comprehensive sentencing and allocation guidelines from the Court of Appeal and the Magistrates' Association.
