The Court of Appeal was the authority on sentencing guidelines until the Sentencing Guidelines Council was set up in the wake of the Criminal Justice Act 2003.
The Sentencing Guidelines Council published a compendium of guideline judgments in March 2005. You can download a PDF version here. To download the document, you may first need to download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat reader.

On Friday 21st September, an addendum was published to the Sentencing Guidelines Council’s Compendium of Court of Appeal Guidelines - it relates to the dangerous offender provisions and brings together key judgments, setting them in the context of the statutory provisions; the document also contains two flow charts to help in ensuring that the proper stages are followed in the decision making process.
Running to over 40 pages, it includes cases decided up to the end of July 2007.
